Minister Dion announced the decontamination of 8 sites, including Giant Mine. “Everything that is located on the ground will be removed, and what is buried will be completely frozen until we have the necessary technology to get rid of it” he explains. We will also proceed with the enlargement of the Tuktut Nogait national park.

A new era

According to the minister, we are now in the era of sustainable economy, with an economy with better environmental technologies, and it is important that Canada does not stay behind. It is therefore a better management of recycling, landfill sites and a better energy efficiency.

Learning  from the past

If a disaster such as that of Giant Mine could not be predicted at the time, the minister reassured us for future projects, such as the pipeline of the Mackenzie: ” We will avoid an environmental problem, we will have the pipeline, but will not endanger the beauty of our nature or our quality of life,” he adds.

Cooperation in the country

One of the challenges for the future is the Kyoto treaty, which requested a reduction of 6 % of polluting emissions in 2010.

Mr. Dion believes that Alberta will eventually follow suit. “The Alberta government is not reluctant, only a little bit skeptical, which is quite normal, in view of their economy based on hydrocarbons. ” He explains. He believes that by having the right technology, a satisfactory solution will be found as well as a technique that can be exported to other countries. This will once again improve Canadian economy.

In addition to these press conferences, the minister was invited to a cocktail with the francophone community. “I find that it is a very dynamic and growing community, there is clearly vitality. ” He concludes.
